In the past, sofas that doubled as beds were often very expensive and very heavy. They were usually called sleeper sofas or hid-a-beds then because a heavy, metal bed frame folded up and was stored inside the sofa itself. However, a convertible sofa offers the exact same option (a sofa that converts into a bed) without either of those drawbacks.
Instead of taking off the sofa’s seat cushions to reveal a folded up metal bed frame and mattress, the back of a convertible sofa simply folds down to create a bed. This has several benefits. First, there’s no heavy bed frame. Second, there’s no heavy mattress – the sofa seat and back cushions do double duty. This makes a convertible sofa much lighter than the old sleeper sofas, allowing you to easily move it around the room.
Convertible sofas often have the option of reclining the back and arms in several positions. You can shift the back to an angle if you’d like to recline, or you can push it all the way down to make a full-sized bed. The arm rests, too can be either be set at an angle or folded completely down.
A convertible sofa can be perfect for a small guest room or apartment in which there isn’t a lot of room. In a spare room, you can use a convertible sofa as a sofa most of the time, but then convert it to a bed when company stays over. The same goes for a small apartment – you can save a lot of space by combining your bed and sofa into one piece of furniture.
