Philippe Starck is well known for taking on challenging projects and his Louis Ghost Chair is no exception. Starck is a French product designer that is not afraid to take on any challenge from designing hotel interiors, the private apartments of past French President’s, restaurant interiors, as well as consumer products like tooth brushes, an optical mouse for Microsoft, yachts and modern furniture.

My current favorite piece from Starck is the Louis Ghost Chair. Based on a Louis XV style chair with the recognizable medallion-shaped back and classic arms, the Ghost Chair is an instant contemporary furniture favorite with cult-like appeal. The chair is incredibly strong and sturdy despite being lightweight and can be used both indoors and outdoors.

While the Barcelona Chair, table, and family of modern furniture products has been around for nearly 90 years it has gone through significant iterations and improvements as well as accompanying ingenious new styles of tufted furniture that compliment the entire collection. Mies van der Rohe died in 1969 but if he were alive today I think he would be pleased that his limited foray into furniture has inspired entire generations in modern furniture design and his pieces are still incredibly relevant today.

The sectional sofa used to dominate whatever room it was in.  The huge, three piece sofas curved around a wall or through the middle of the room, and they were often large and bulky.  After that, the sofa sectional was redesigned to include rocking recliners on one end or a sleeper sofa section.  Some even featured fold-down sections in the middle that acted as a table.  However, modern sofa sectionals have lost the curved look, and many are now streamlined and no longer feature so many built-in things.

Like nearly all modern furniture, modern sofa sectionals are designed to look sleek, slim, and stylish.  Many are no longer curved but instead form L shapes.  This still allows them to find in a corner of the room, and since there’s no curved piece, you no longer have that odd empty space behind your sectional.  There are even some modern sofa sectionals that come in three pieces and make an open box, giving you and your guests plenty of room.

Another new feature that many modern sofa sectionals include is a matching ottoman or coffee table.  These pieces are either covered in the same material as the rest of the sofa or are done in a matching wood.  These sets really help bring your living room together in one cohesive theme, and they look amazing.

Finally, one last trend that has appeared in modern sofa sectionals is the backless section.  One part of the sofa, usually the smaller part that comes out from the rest of the sofa, is designed without a back.  This makes it look almost like a small bed.  It also allows people to sit on either side of the sofa, giving you additional seating options.

Modern Living Room Furniture no longer looks like it used to.  In fact, some of today’s modern living room items would never have looked right in the more traditional setting.  This is because as styles change, people begin to look for more and more unique pieces of furniture.  Homes have very different styles now, and many are more open to different looks.

One of the most unique modern living room furniture pieces is the bean bag chair.  Yes, the bean bag chair is coming back into style.  It was quite popular years ago, but then it was more or less regulated to kid’s rooms.  However, huge, comfortable bean bag chairs have worked their way back into the modern living room furniture collection.  They provide a very comfortable and relaxing way of watching a movie or playing video games.  However, bean bag chairs do have a few drawbacks—they’re low to the ground and may not provide enough back support for some.

The lounger is another piece of modern living room furniture that looks very different from standard chairs.  Loungers are curved chairs that provide leg support.  Many almost look like the letter S on its side.  In a way, the lounger is an upgrade to those old lawn chairs that were long enough for people to stretch out on.  Loungers are great for reading, watching TV or even for napping, although you have to like sleeping on your back.  One of the great benefits of the lounger is that it provides support for your entire body.

Office furniture used to be very boring and very standard.  You’d have a wooden slab of a desk, a standard office chair behind it, and perhaps a worktable or a credenza with a hutch behind you.  Your other option was a curved desk, but those often take up so much room that they’re impractical.  However, contemporary office furniture gives you some unique and different ways to make your office look great while giving you a lot of work room.

To start with, forget all about those huge wooden desks and cheap rolling chairs.  They’ve been completely replaced.  Instead, contemporary office furniture is all about looking sleek while still being quite simple.  Contemporary desks, for example, are now very open.  You no longer have large pieces of wood coming down in front of the desk.  Instead, many contemporary desks are made out of metal and glass.  This actually leads to making your desk look smaller and makes the room seem less crowded.  Even wooden desks tend to look more open these days, although some, especially corner models, do look more traditional.

Contemporary office furniture doesn’t just stop at the desk, of course.  Office chairs are quite different these days.  Older, more traditional office chairs were usually solid black and were designed for function, not for looks or for the health of the occupant.  Modern office chairs are available in many different colors, and they’re no longer just functional.  Because people spend eight hours or more sitting in these chairs, they have been designed to provide the most comfort and to help people avoid the aches and pains of bad posture.

You don’t have to pay a lot of money for a great looking set of furniture.  In fact, there are many different types of modern furniture that don’t cost a lot but look very nice.  Part of the reason people think cheap modern furniture doesn’t exist is because all they see are the very unique, expensive pieces.  Yes, a chair that looks like something out of a Van Gogh painting will probably cost a lot of money, but not all modern furniture is this different or costly.

Take storage options, for example.  There are many different pieces of cheap modern furniture such as bookcases and display cabinets that really aren’t any more expensive than items made in the more standard look.  However, these storage items and shelves don’t look cheap at all—they certainly look better than items you would pick up at a department store!  What’s more, they don’t look like something you bought in a box and put together.  Each has its own style instead of looking like a box.

Often, cheap modern furniture is made out of materials that aren’t quite as costly.  For example, a lot of cheap modern furniture makes use of metal and glass.  Some modern desks, for example, use strong metal supports instead of big pieces of wood.  This not only means that fewer materials are used, resulting in a lower price, but also that the furniture is often very strong.  It’s also easier to put together since you have no big, bulky wooden pieces to deal with.

Many people love the look of modern furniture, but on the other hand, many people simply do not like modern furniture design.  It is quite different from traditional furniture, and that’s why it’s somewhat controversial.  For some, the look is ultra modern and amazing, but for others, it’s weird and cold.

Modern furniture varies greatly from room to room.  In the dining room, modern furniture tends to look sleek and shiny.  Many modern chairs, especially bar stools, are not the traditional seat and back look.  Instead, many are made out of one piece of metal or plastic.  Others may not have any backs at all, while some may have interesting half circle backs or sculpted backs.  Modern dining room tables tend to have glass tops or rectangular, one-piece wooden tops.

In the bedroom, modern furniture design has gone simple.  Modern beds rarely feature footboards these days, and headboards are often both small and simple or huge, padded boards that dominate the room.  Bed frames are very low to the ground, and box springs often aren’t necessary.  These platform beds often come with attached end tables on either side that matches the platform.

In the living room, modern furniture design again looks very different.  Many sectional sofas now feature at least one part that has no back on it, allowing it to easily become a small bed if necessary.  Other sectionals now form squares with an opening on one end instead of the half-circle shape that was common before.  In fact, almost all modern sofas are rectangular and no longer come with that curved section that could be difficult to fit in a room.

Modern lounge chairs and other seating options are also quite unique.  Some modern furniture design looks space age-it’s made out of shiny steal and interesting fabrics.  Other seating options are almost a throw-back to the 70s, such as the new line of beanbag furniture.

As you can see, no matter what room you’re decorating, modern furniture design offers something unique, stylish, and different-if it’s a look you like.

If you think of a sectional sofa, you may think of those three-pieced, curved sectionals that used to be quite popular. Well, today’s modern sectional sofas are actually somewhat different than these older models. Some, in fact, are radically different.

The first upgrade to the sectional sofa was the inclusion of the easy chair. While the pieces looked mostly like the three-pieced curved sectionals, one section would lean back like an easy chair, complete with footrest at the bottom. Other additions included a concealed table in the middle of the sectional for drinks or plates. Often, the back of this part of the sofa folded down to form the table.

However, modern sectional sofas are a bit different than all of these. Few are curved in the traditional way, and many have more than three sections. Some, in fact, form an open square. These sectionals include one long piece across the back and two shorter pieces that come out on either side. They’re great for setting around a coffee table playing cards to chatting.

Others feature one very long piece and then a section that comes out from it that does not feature a back. It’s almost like a small bed on one side of the sofa. This is very nice for watching TV or reading. This type of sofa also makes a room look a little more open. If you have a guest staying over, you can even move the backless part over so that it’s even with the rest of the sofa to make a larger sleeping area.

Many sectional sofas also come with coffee tables and foot rests, too. This can give your living room a more coherent look and feel to it since the foot rest will be the same color. One final thing to note about modern sectional sofas is that they tend to be a little larger than old style sectionals, so you may need to consider the space you’re planning to put them in.

Flat panel televisions are very popular these days, and many people have already upgraded their old, boxy televisions to these sleek, modern ones. These flat panels look great hung on the wall, but some people prefer to set them in a more traditional entertainment center. For these people, a new type of entertainment center has been created: the modern TV lift cabinet.

How does the modern TV lift cabinet work? When you’re watching television, it looks just like an entertainment center or a television stand. But when you’re finished, you touch a button and the lift lowers your television down into the stand, leaving it looking sleek and clear. Some modern TV lifts even look like bookshelves. You can place your favorite books or decorations on the shelves. When the television is lowered into the stand, these shelves become visible for all to see. When the television is in use, your items are simply hidden by the TV.

Many modern TV lift cabinets also feature shelves or drawers for storage. These shelves are set in front of the television storage area. This means they’re not quite as deep as one would expect them to be, but they still offer a good amount of storage space. The lift mechanisms that raise and lower the television are similar to the brackets used to hand flat panel televisions on the wall. This means they’re very secure and will safely raise and lower the TV. The lifts are designed to work as quietly as possible, so you won’t even hear the TV as it magically rises out of the stand.

Outdoor furniture used to look very, well, outdoors. The furniture looked large and bulky, and much of it was made out of hard, uncomfortable metal. The outdoor furniture that did have cloth often looked ugly or was made out of material that was made out of stiff fabric. However, today’s modern outdoor furniture on your porch looks slick and clean, giving your backyard a very different look.

The new, modern outdoor folding chair works just like older folding chairs. But these older chairs, as you may remember, were made out of interwoven fabric strips that were often bright, ugly colors. Others were made out of plastic, which was just not very comfortable. However, these modern chairs use polypropylene for the seats and backs. This product is strong, comfortable, and very flexible. The chairs fold up for easy storage just like the older types of chairs, but they look much, much better.

Other outdoor chairs don’t fold up, but they’re made of very sturdy metal that is rust proof. These chairs can be left outdoors during all types of weather. You don’t have to bring them in during storms, and if they get dirty, you can simply wipe them off with a damp cloth and they look like new.

There are a number of tables to compliment these modern chairs, of course. Many of these tables are very simple-the tabletop is set upon a pole. There are no legs so you can set as many chairs around the table as you can fit. While older outdoor tables had glass tabletops, many modern outdoor tables are made out of aluminum and feature small holes in the table. This lets rain fall right through the table, making it very easy to clean. Like the chairs, the tables won’t rust, so it’s fine to leave them out during all forms of weather.
